BOARD AND BATTEN ENTRYWAY WALL WITH HOOKS

February 15, 2019 by FunandFunctional

This board and batten entryway wall with hooks was once a blank wall.  Now it is a functional drop zone for all of the stuff we are constantly bringing in and out of the house.

With two kids, the amount of stuff in our house keeps getting more and more out of control.  We needed an area of the house where we could keep everything that we were constantly bringing in and out of the house.  I am talking about things like coats, hats, purses, scarves, shoes, backpacks, etc.

We didn’t have a designated mudroom or drop zone in our house.  Instead, we had been putting our stuff on any available surface we could find.  This means that our kitchen island collected a lot of clutter!

After thinking a lot about a solution, my husband and I decided that a board and batten wall treatment with hooks would be the best solution for us.  It would create a nice little drop zone for us to keep all of our stuff.

I am very happy with how the wall turned out.  Today I am going to share a few details about our new wall!  I will also be doing a much more detailed post about the building process in the future, so stay tuned.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The wall that we decided to cover with board and batten is 124 inches wide.  This is a pretty big area!  I was definitely nervous at first about covering a big space like that, but I think it worked out great in the end!

In case you are wondering, we have 8 foot ceilings in our house.  The pieces of wood that are attached to the wall are a combination of 1×6 boards, 1×4 boards, and 1×3 boards.  There is nothing in between those boards.  To make it easier, I just painted the wall the same color as the boards.

HORIZONTAL WOOD

The top horizontal piece that is flat against the wall is a 1×6 board.  I chose to attach this board at a height that is approximately two-thirds of the way up the wall because it looks good with the windows on the adjacent wall.

I also attached a 1×2 board to the top of this board to create a small ledge.  Below is a close up picture of the ledge I am talking about.

The middle horizontal piece is a 1×4 board.  The placement for this board was based on the location of the light switch on the wall.

VERTICAL WOOD

The two outer vertical pieces are 1×4 boards.  The rest of the vertical pieces are 1×3 boards.  I liked the idea of having the outer vertical pieces slightly larger than the rest of the vertical pieces.  It seems to frame the entire wall better in my opinion.  The seven vertical pieces split the wall into 6 sections.

BASEBOARDS

We decided to keep the existing baseboards on the wall.  This was mostly because it was the easiest option.  We didn’t want the baseboards to be different from the rest of the baseboards in the room.  We also didn’t want to replace all of the baseboards in the entire room.

HOOKS

I ended up hanging a total of 11 hooks on the wall.  There are six hooks at the top and five hooks in the middle.  This adds a lot of storage for us!

PAINT

Who knew there could be so many options for white paint!  After looking at several white paint swatches, we finally decided on Decorator’s White from Benjamin Moore.

Stay tuned for a much more detailed post about the building process!

Have a great day!

What a great post! I love your board and batten idea combined with hooks. All of my kids coats and backpacks are a serious issue in my house as well. I could use something like this. Great idea, I will have to show my hubby. He did a wainscoting idea like this in our dining room(no hooks) and I absolutely love it ….but making it practical at the same time is fantastic! Saw your post at Grandmas house we go party and pinning! First time I have been to your site. Love it!

Thank you! The hooks have been very helpful for us. I wish I had done it sooner! I just checked out your site. I love the furniture makeovers!

I want to do this, but my wall is textured and I am wondering if it will look funny. I can’t really tell from your picture but is your wall textured? It looks smooth. Yours looks awesome by the way.

Thank you! My walls are not textured, so I am not sure how this would look with textured walls. Good luck if you decide to do this!
