BLACK AND WHITE BABY TOY

March 13, 2018 by FunandFunctional

My almost two year old daughter loves to play with her new baby brother.  Unfortunately, there isn’t much she can do with him right now.  Since he loves to look at black and white pictures, I made a toy for them to play together.

I have heard that babies love to look at black and white images, especially when they are on red backgrounds.  It is easier for them to see the high contrast colors.

I started by printing out some black and white images.  I used four black and white patterns and four black and white animals.  The animals I picked are based on what my daughter likes at the moment.  It might seem a little strange that I included a skunk.  That is because we just read a book that had a skunk in it.  It was the first time she saw a skunk, so now she is really excited about them!

Each image is about 2 inches by 2 inches.  Mine came from Microsoft Word, but you can get them from anywhere you want.  If you don’t feel like finding your own images, feel free to print out the images I used using the link above.

The next step was to cut out the images and tape them to some red cardstock.

I started by cutting the cardstock into a strip.  Mine is about 12 inches long by 5 inches wide.  I used my paper trimmer (similar).

Then I folded the strip of cardstock in half.

Next, I flipped it over and folded in the opposite direction on both sides of the original fold.  It looked like an accordion when it was done.

After that, I taped a black and white patterned image to the cardstock to see how it looked.  I used these adhesive squares to attach the black and white pattern to the cardstock.

It looked good to me, so I finished taping the rest of the patterns onto one side of the cardstock.

Then I taped the 4 black and white animals to the other side of the cardstock.

Making the black and white baby toy was a very quick project!

My son loves to look at the black and white pictures.  It is also nice that the toy stands up on its own so he can look at it while he is doing tummy time.  My daughter loves to show her brother the animals!

Have you made any toys for your baby?  Let me know in the comments what you made.

Have a great day!
